Is There Such a Thing as Food to Comfort Cancer Patients?

Certain foods can actually help you fight your battle. Things like sweet potatoes, tofu, grapes, even olive oil are chocked full of vitamins and minerals that can perk you up and give you energy. They also taste great which is something you don't think about when you hear healthy food.

Here is eight foods for cancer patients that you should consider that not only can give you energy but shrink cancer cells too.  

1. Sweet Potatoes 

Sweet potatoes aren't just good for your Thanksgiving pies. They are also perfect for preventing and helping lung and prostate cancer. All it takes is one cup of sweet potatoes a week which isn't too painful given how great they taste. 

The lutein and carotenoids in sweet potatoes will keep you full, but they have the opposite effect on cancer cells. To get the best result out of them, you don't have to stop at one cup of potatoes a week. You can do one cup a day instead.  

2. Olive Oil

Oleocanthal is a compound that you will find in olive oil, and it quite literally battles cancer cells. It ruptures lysosomes within cells which begins the process of cell death. This process may sound a little frightening but it doesn't harm healthy cells.

Researchers have tested this with cultures of breast, prostate, and pancreatic tumor cells. They didn't stand a chance when put against this compound. If you aren't cooking with olive oil yet, it's time to make the switch.

3. Tofu

Tofu contains a compound called Isoflavones which some fear will cause cancer due to their similarities to estrogen. The opposite is actually true. While Isoflavones share some properties of estrogen, they also have anti-estrogen ones which actually fight breast cancer. 

Soy-based products like tofu and edamame are high in fiber which will lower your risk of many different cancers like colorectal and prostate. 

4. Red or Purple Grapes

Chemicals found red and purple grapes have the potential to stop cancer cells from spreading. This has been tested with grape extracts from the plant. 

Researchers pitted the grape extract against the enzyme in cells that cause them to reproduce. They proved that it's possible for grapes to halt this enzyme which means it can stop the growth of cancer cells.

Nobody knows how many grapes you actually have to eat to gain this benefit but, who doesn't like snacking on grapes by the bowl full anyway?   

5. Garlic 

 The allyl and sulfur found in garlic are known to stop tumor cells from growing. When cells go through cell division, they go under a certain amount of stress. These compounds make those cells vulnerable to that stress. 

While it can stop cancer cells from growing, too much can actually do more harm than good. It can create a nasty odor on your breath and skin and cause stomach issues like diarrhea. 

As gross as this might sound, you want to eat garlic raw to get the best effects from it. If you're cooking it, allow it to sit for about ten minutes after you chop it up. This allows time for the helpful minerals to release before you pop it in the pot. 

6. Spinach

Like sweet potatoes, spinach is full of lutein. On top of this, it's the food to eat to get zeaxanthin and carotenoids. These remove free radicals from your body before they're able to do any damage.

This means that they can go against several cancers like mouth, esophagus, and stomach. This isn't even all spinach can do. It also contains fiber which lengthens the number of cancers that they can fight. 

You can get these benefits rather you eat it raw, or cook it. If spinach isn't really something you enjoy, then a kale smoothie would be a worthy substitute. 

7. Wild or Brown Rice 

Due to chemotherapy, cancer patients often feel tired and sluggish. Whole grains like brown rice and wheat can help with this issue. Eating about three servings of rice daily can give you the necessary carbs and vitamin B that can fill you will energy and make you feel better. 

Not only can it make you feel better, but the selenium can also help fight several diseases, including cancer. 

8. Lentils 

Lentils contain phytochemicals, vitamins, minerals, and dietary fibers that are the ticket to fighting cancer. They have flavonol which is great for going against breast cancer.

There are also studies that suggest that it can reduce cancers involving the upper digestive tract, the mouth, throat, esophagus, and larynx.  You can get these effects if you eat at least two servings of lentils a week. This is the food to eat considering how many dishes you can make with them.
